History
In August 1947, the preparatory
supporting organization for establishing Dong-A College,
with Dr. Jae-hwan Jeong pen-named Sokdang as its leader,
applied to the Ministry of Education for the permission
of the establishment of the Dong-A Institution, a juridical
foundation and for the approval of the establishment
of Dong-A college. Upon obtaining the sanction of the
authorities, Dong-A College, as a four-year college,
opened its doors on December 30, 1947 with five departments
divided into two schools: School of Liberal Arts and
Natural Sciences and School of Law.
Dr. Jae-hwan Jeong
took office as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees
and Dr. Gi-won Jeong was inaugurated as the first dean
of the college. In the state of social anarchy just
after the Liberation, the college adopted the traditional
idea of ¡°Devotion to Mankind¡± as its school foundation
ideology along with the school precepts of ¡°Freedom,
Truth, and Justice.¡±
In July 1949, the
first commencement ceremony was held, and in the next
year, when the Korean War broke out, the college opened
its special wartime classes of general culture and sciences.
In 1953, the college
began to develop greatly under Dr. Jae-hwan Jeong, who
succeeded Dr. Gi-won Jeong and became the second dean.
The School of Agriculture,
the School of Engineering and the School of the Night
Courses were established in 1954, 1955, and 1956 respectively.
In 1958, the establishment of the Graduate School was
approved. The construction of the major buildings, including
the present Main Hall building, made the campus a great
academic sanctuary at the foot of Mt. Kuduk.
In 1959, the college
saw its status elevated to that of a university and
Dr. Jae-hwan Jeong took up the first president of the
university. This was also the period during which the
university expanded its external facilities as well.
The buildings such as the Library, the Museum, and the
Science Hall were also constructed, and a variety of
attached institutes were also established, so that the
university began to be true to its promise as a great
private educational institution.
The ten-year period
from the middle of the 1950s to that of the 1960s can
be regarded as the period of strengthening the basis
of academic atmosphere and of substantial growth. In

Jeong took office as its first president.
